The Baba Yaga Kollektif

An Origin Story

Hello there - Veronika speaking. Things are going to get a little egocentric so bare with - swear down there’s some important stuff in here. Maybe. First of all, speaking on the behalf of the BYK, I hope today has been kind to you all (and if not, at the very least that it hasn’t completely sucked ass). I figured if I didn’t do this right now, it’d never be done. Simply put, the Baba Yaga Kollektif was originally intended to be a platform for me to just complain and rant about politics. In the greater scheme of things, I was (and am?) considering studying political journalism so the plan was to curate a portfolio. It was the lovely Claire who suggested that a portfolio would be a good advantage to have. However, after a few weeks of dreaming and fantasising about my own blog, I was faced with a problem: I’m deadass the poster child for procrastination. As a measure of how bad I am for it, for all those who went to university or have ever had a hefty deadline of any sort - you know when you’re advised not to leave your dissertation to the night before? Well, your gal here went ahead and did just that. Basically, what I’m getting at is, there wasn’t and isn’t a single chance in hell that I’d have enough self-discipline or motivation to write on a regular basis. I spoke to Claire again and asked if she wanted to maybe write a blog together? Because why not? We studied at university together and had several assignments that included blog posting and it had been pretty fun for me (don’t know about you, Claire, but you’re here now - enjoy it while it lasts).

This inspired the idea that maybe some other folk might be interested? Fast forward a considerable amount of time (because, like I said, mega-procrastinator over here) and I’m having dinner with the fabulous Rhona and Sara. Ideas start to snowball, what we’d write about and so on (and oh boy, do we have a lot we want to write about). When it came to naming the blog, I was certain I just wanted to go with the Kollektif. It legit just means ‘collective’ but written in romanised Russian. But then…Sara mentions Baba Yaga and it seemed only natural to put the two together. To provide you with a highly-condensed, possibly inaccurate (depending on where you get your facts from) version of the folktale, Baba Yaga was perceived to be an evil hag. She lived in the forrest in this like, one-chicken legged house that hopped about places and you should pray for anyone who had the misfortune to cross her path. But, as Sara pointed out, powerful and wise women throughout time and history have often been stained as villainous, as dangerous, as something to avoid. Real talk, Baba Yaga was just a wise old gal who was in tune with nature and herself. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

*the term ‘women’ in the BYK context is inclusive to all those who identify with this category and it's also inclusive to those who don’t identify.

We Are...

V: Lowkey still under construction but that’s cool. The BYK is a journey. Watch this space because it’s going to expand and when it does, it will be glorious.

And now over to the lovely Sara who can articulate considerably better than I can.

Since we have told you what we are about and what are aims are (V: kind of, I mean, it’s still a little vague but you get the general idea), we are now going to tell you how we are going to approach these aims and how we view the BYK. The work we produce is part of learning process. A process not only for those who desire to be active consumers and readers but for us as writers as well. The intention of our work is to ignite discussions. As a website, discussions on this platform are purposefully framed to be dynamic and not static. A place for growth in perception and understanding of the world we live in and the people we live with in this world. Therefore, it is important to note that the content we produce is not going to be perfect. Since the members of this collective are currently (V: almost) homogenous in our positions and perspectives (Female, White, Straight), we may make mistakes regarding other intersectional experiences. Because of this, there is chance we are going to make mistakes. We want you to know that we take this very seriously and are trying our best to make this platform intersectional and accessible. When we do make a mistake, CALL US OUT! However, we ask that when you do this, you do it constructively.

We ask this because we too are learning as we are creating and for us to learn from our mistakes effectively, we need feed that is constructive in order for us to learn from it and apply it our evolving perspective and following. All in all, we want you to know that this website is a platform for social commentary. It is not a forum of prescription, but a platform in which the BYK will incite the commentary that invites reader to join in the conversation. Discussion in which we can learn and grow from one another consciously. (V: It’s time to konnekt…)

CLAIRE

Good day all, I am the one known as Abi. I am 23 and recently graduated from uni (to which I owe my many, many deep-set wrinkles). Currently, I work in a sweet little coffee shop in the South East of England. Due to a pretty futile attention span, my interests seem to rotate from photography to writing to dancing to drinking. Actually that last one is very consistent…this is no longer a biography but a cry for help…anyhoo! Thanks for reading, please visit again soon!

TBC.

My name is Claire. I am a recent English and Film graduate, pursuing a career in journalism. Born and bred in Edinburgh, I try and make the most of working in the cultural capital, having worked at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and reviewed for the Edinburgh Fesitvals Magazine at last year’s Fringe. Outside of working, I currently spend my time writing, running and interning at Ringwood Publishing, championing independent Scottish literature.

Hope you are enjoying reading BYK! My name is Lucy. I’m Scottish and still based in Scotland for my postgrad at University. I mostly love writing/watching/talking about film (any genre really but my favourites are horror and 80s movies). Also love literature, music, space, whales, the internet and food.

Dia daoibh uilig. I’m Méabh. I’m an Irish, Belfast-based, ex-Edinburgh-renting, recently graduated unprofessional. Currently waitressing part-time and working for a Belfast media company, I am excited to have this space to write again! You can expect my work to veer towards nationality, politics, identity etc etc - I hope you enjoy BYK.

SARA

Hey Reader. Hope you are enjoying BYK. My name is Sara. I'm an American born PNW bred Edinburgh based writer. My current preoccupation is my Masters in Creative Writing. Outside of that I relish my regular yoga practice, conversing with friends over good food, and escapes to countrysides.

Hello lads - this is Veronika (or V for the exceptionally unbothered). I am also a recent English and Film graduate. Born into a family best described as a Slav cocktail, I moved from Lithuania to Scotland at the ripe ol’ age of seven where I’ve lived ever since. Using my degree, I’m currently working two part-time jobs that are slowly but surely sucking my will to live dry. I am both Aberdeen’s finest waitress (note the heavy sarcasm) and a barista who can’t make coffee. Outside of work, I mainly cry myself to sleep because of the direction my life has taken and eat scrambled eggs straight out the pan using my bare hands. I am also a discreet optimist who likes art.

You know when you need to describe yourself and your knowledge of your entire personality flies out the window? THAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT ABOUT NOW - That being said I will try my darnedest. My name is Sophie and I’m a Scottish gal trying her best to get through university life studying psychology and sociology whilst also attempting to find time for doodling line drawings, scribbling in my journal, having a good ol’ laugh with my chums (friends) and going to London to see my long-distance boyfriend.
